Enactments and the Forward Edge of the Analytic Relationship: Extending Marion Tolpin’s Legacy
Presenter: Steven Stern, PsyD
Discussant: James W. Anderson, PhD
Steven Stern, PsyD, is a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. He is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Maine Medical Center. About his book published in 2017, Needed Relationships and Psychoanalytic Healing, Lew Aron wrote: “An innovative work of scholarship and a leading-edge contribution to psychoanalytic practice and education. Focusing on…conscious and unconscious participation, Stern advocates a holistic relationship approach that uses but transcends theory in co-creating forms of engagement contoured to the evolving needs of each patient.”
James W. Anderson, PhD, is President of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society, a faculty member at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, and Editor of the Annual of Psychoanalysis. He is also Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University.
After the presentation the participant will be able to:
a.) understand and use the construct of needed analytic relationships as an organizing framework for psychoanalytic therapy with adult patients;
b.) describe the concept of the forward edge of the relational unconscious, see it operating in one’s own psychoanalytic therapy cases, and integrate it as a guide in clinical decision-making.
Admission is free. No reservations are required. Continuing Education Credits are offered only to members.
