Chicago Psychoanalytic Society Scientific Program: Friday, September 15, 2017 – 7:00 PM University Club – 76 E. Monroe St., Chicago, ILEnactments and the Forward Edge of theAnalytic Relationship: Extending Marian Tolpin’s LegacyPresenter: Steven Stern, PsyD Discussant: James W. Anderson, PhD In his talk, Dr. Stern presents some of the central themes from his new book: Needed Relationships and Psychoanalytic Healing. He focuses on how the therapist seeks to form with the patient a relationship which facilitates the patient’s growth. This “needed relationship” provides a “transitional area” within which exploration and play can take place. To illustrate his approach, Dr. Stern discusses his work with a patient. Steven Stern, PsyD, is a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. He is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Maine Medical Center. About his book published in 2017, Needed Relationships and Psychoanalytic Healing, Lew Aron wrote: “An innovative work of scholarship and a leading-edge contribution to psychoanalytic practice and education. Focusing on…conscious and unconscious participation, Stern advocates a holistic relationship approach that uses but transcends theory in co-creating forms of engagement contoured to the evolving needs of each patient.” James W.
