The Metaphors We Live By: The Psychoanalyst’s Biography and
its Influence on Pre-conscious Processes
Presenter: Kathleen Kelley-Lainé
Saturday, March 4, 2023, 10:00 am - noon Chicago Time
By Zoom
Kathleen Kelley-Lainé is a trilingual psychoanalyst working in private practice (English, French and Hungarian). She is an active member of the Société Psychanalytique de Paris, the European Psychoanalytical Federation, the International Psychoanalytical Association, and the International Sandor Ferenczi Society. She is internationally known for her many conference presentations, her published articles in psychoanalytical journals, and her books. She is author of Peter Pan the Lost Child (released first in 1992, published in a new English translation by the Phoenix Publishing House, 2022); co-author with Dominique Rousset of Contes Cruelles de la Mondialisation (Bayard Ed. 2001); and author of Disabled Youth: The Right to Adult Status, (OCD Publications and Information Centre, Washington D.C., 1987).
Talk Description: Kathleen Kelley-Lainé will discuss how the analyst makes use of personal metaphors in working with patients. According to Freud, analysts can only take a patient to where they have been in their own lives. The analyst’s own story, psychic processes, and the “metaphors” she lives by are fundamental tools in work with patients. Having written the book Peter Pan, the Lost Child, Ms. Kelley-Lainé will explore how the process of writing a book that required intense self-exploration affected her listening to the unconscious world of her patients. She also will look at the relevance of these matters in her work with one of her patients.
