On Learning to Think Queerly: Forging a

Gender-Inclusive Model of Identity

Presenter: Christine Sterkel, MD

Discussant: Kate Schechter, PhD

In her talk, Christine Sterkel advocates that we as clinicians listen to genderqueer, or gender non-conforming, people with an expanded understanding of their inner experience.  She encourages us to lean into what is unfamiliar or strange, if it is, and to adapt so as to provide a kind of optimal responsiveness to anyone who walks into our consulting room.  Such a stance means embracing paradox, hearing entendre, tolerating uncertainty, inviting ambiguity, and asking for assistance from our patients to communicate in a useful and accurate way.  Dr. Sterkel also narrates her experience of working with a person who suffered profoundly by feeling limited in his body and looks at what it was like for him living inside it.  She discusses the painful and tumultuous process that led to his identifying as genderqueer.

Presenter: Christine Sterkel, MD, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, is a Faculty Member at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and Rush Medical College.

Discussant: Kate Schechter, PhD, a social worker, medical anthropologist, and psychoanalyst, is Assistant Professor at Rush Medical College and a faculty member at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.  She is the author of Illusions of a Future: Psychoanalysis and the Biopolitics of Desire (2014).

Educational objectives:
After the presentation, the participant will be able to:

1.  make use of a novel model of gender inclusivity, one that breaks open binary frameworks;
2.  view gender dysphoria as no longer a diagnosis but rather a complicated consequence of a gender-body mismatch that may cause frustrated longings for a sense of internal cohesion despite disruptive misgendering.
