“The Connectedness of Self Psychology: Implications

for the Approach to Intractable States of Mind”

Scott M. Davis, M.D. is a graduate of Haverford College, Northwestern University Medical School, where he also completed his psychiatry residency, and the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. He is in private practice in Chicago and Highland Park. He is the coordinator of the Midwest Self Psychology Study Group and the Co-Chair of the 2013 Psychology of the Self Conference (to be held in Chicago). He is a member of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Committee at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. In 2002, he published an article in Psychoanalytic Inquiry entitled “The Relevance of Gerald Edelman’s Theory of Neuronal Group Selection and Nonlinear Dynamic Systems for Psychoanalysis”.

Mark Levey, M.D. is a training and supervising analyst at the Institute and an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine, University of Illinois, Department of Psychiatry.

Educational Objectives: At the conclusion of the program, participants will: 1) Understand the concepts of both a recognition process and expectancies and learn how to apply these concepts clinically; 2) Learn what is meant by an implicit connectedness sensibility and how to use this clinically to enhance the therapeutic relationship between patient and therapist; and 3) Recognize primary emotions or vitality affects and learn how to apply this knowledge clinically in establishing dialogue between patient and therapist.
