The Consultation Room as Hospital: Approaches to

Treating Patients with Psychosis

Presenter: David Garfield, MD & Katherine Williams, MA, MSW, LCSW

There was a time when patients with psychosis could obtain long-term, psychoanalytically informed treatment in a hospital setting. However, the mental health landscape has radically changed, and currently few long-term in-patient options remain for patients with psychosis. Through the use of case material, the presenters will explore approaches to the treatment of patients with psychosis. In addition, the presenters will explore countertransference reactions in work with patients with psychosis and motivations for this work.

Learning Objectives:  After the presentation the participant, will be able to

  1. Describe clinical approaches in working with patients with psychosis
  2. Manage more effectively their countertransference in working with patients with psychosis.

Presenter: David Garfield, M.D, is professor and clerkship director at Rosalind Franklin Medical School and faculty member at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. He is the author of numerous publications including “Unbearable Affect: A Guide to the Psychotherapy of Psychosis,” which is in its second edition. He is a former clinical fellow in psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School Massachusetts Mental Health Center. Dr. Garfield maintains a private practice in Highland Park.

Presenter: Katherine Williams, MA, MSW, LCSW, is a member of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society. She is an adjunct at Loyola University Chicago in the School of Social Work where she is also a doctoral candidate. She is a clinical outcomes researcher, and her dissertation explores the patient’s experience of psychoanalysis using a qualitative research lens.  She is also a candidate at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.  She maintains a private practice in Chicago.
