Topic:  Maternal Eroticism: Its Defensive Uses and Transformations

Presenter:

Andrea Celenza, PhD, celebrated as one of the most engaging psychoanalytic speakers, is a Clinical Instructor of Psychology in the Department Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, and a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis.  She is also a faculty member and a supervising and training analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  Her three books are:

Sexual Boundary Violations:  Therapeutic, Supervisory, and Academic Contexts.  New York: Jason Aronson; 2007.

Erotic Revelations: Transferences, Countertransferences, and Perversions.  New York: Routledge; 2014.

And, recently published: Transference, Love, Being: Essential Essays from the Field. London: Routledge, 2022.

Dr. Celenza will discuss maternal erotic transferences and how these are addressed.  To illustrate, she will include verbatim clinical process.  She will clarify the meaning of maternal eroticism, a concept that has often been misunderstood.  She will point out how femininity and femaleness are internalized at different levels.  Relying in part on the work of Julia Kristeva, she will explain how maternal eroticism can be vitalizing, devitalizing, and re-vitalizing.  She will illustrate how the therapeutic process, when it includes maternal transference, can have defensive elements but also can include loving, containing, and reworking transformations.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

1) describe maternal eroticism as it pertains to transference;

2) distinguish between defensive uses of maternal erotic transferences and uses of these transferences when they can promote positive transformation.
