Chicago Psychoanalytic Society Study Group

"A brief introduction to the Work of
Psychoanalyst Dominique Scarfone"

 3 Sessions: April 13, 27, and May 11

Via Zoom

The CPS study group is in preparation for Society lecture by Dr. Scarfone on May 23, 2023 on Zoom on the topic of: "Does Psychoanalysis Have Something to Contribute to Our Reflections on Our Present Cultural, Society, and Political Crises?"

An invitation to explore a few of the many ideas developed by French thinker Dominique Scarfone whose views follow and expand on the legacy of both Freud and Laplanche.  We will take up questions such as "differentiating sexuality and the sex drives, explain the links between violence and the sexual drives, identify the role of the sexual drives in today's violent world and discuss the role played by narcissism in mediating between the drives and the world scene." All the while we will be (re) introduced  to French psychoanalytic concepts such as pulsion, jouissance, après coup, méconnaissance, the Sexual, and so on.

This group is open to all members of the Society, on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a maximum of ten members.  Please register online here by clicking REGISTER.  As this is a pilot program to introduce a “French Psychoanalytic Series” as a possible viable educational project at CPS. there will be no CEU’s and no fees.  Participants will be asked to read the papers in advance and to kindly commit to joining all three meetings.  These meetings will be held every other week for one and half hours and facilitated by Dr. Suzanne Rosenfeld on Zoom.  Each meeting will be based on an in-depth discussion of 1 to 3 papers over the entire three meetings.  Once the group is formed,  Suzanne will send out the first paper that was given by Dominique Scarfone for distribution to the study group—the paper closest to the topic of his Society lecture. The other two papers can be found on the PEP Web.
