Speaker:
Beverley Zabriskie LCSW is a Jungian Analyst in New York City, where she is a founding faculty member and past president of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association (JPA, founded in 2004) where she now teaches She is a past president of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP ) She served as vice president of the Philemon Foundation which produces the unpublished works of C. G. Jung She has been Assistant Editor for the Journal of Analytical Psychology (London) and the San Francisco Jung Journal. She is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Helix Center for Interdisciplinary Investigation, housed at the New York Psychoanalytic Association. Her most recent presentations explore how Dreams of Scientists have impacted their science, in the mind-matter spectrum of synchronicity.
Description:
Jung said “it is the duty of the doctor” to accept and mirror analysands’ emotion. Today emotion is seen as a source of cognition, as the stuff of actions and reactions, of memory, and imagination. It functions as the link between instinct and those basic, species wide patterns we deem archetypal. This talk synthesizes modern neuroscience and Jungian psychology, demonstrating that biological brain functions align with Carl Jung's concepts of the unconscious and the transcendent function (how the brain resolves internal conflict by integrating unconscious and conscious). The research indicates that the brain internally generates reality through narrative and metaphor while physically synchronizing nervous systems during interpersonal interactions. This presentation bridges the gap between neuroscience findings and Jung's observations.
Agenda:
First hour, presentation
Second hour, audience questions and discussion
